The men of the VA Beach 1/2 MarathonThis weekend Blair and I and three other fun-loving runner couples packed up the Garmins and running shoes and ventured to VA Beach for the VA Beach Rock 'n' Roll 1/2 Marathon

In a word, FUN. Flat, fast course, great crowd support, and at the end of the race they handed out towels dipped in ice-water and rocket pops. Plus, I got to run the race with friends. Does it get any better?

Checking In

How, HOW I ask you, can it possibly be the middle of August already?? We're going to blink and it will be Christmas. I remember when I was a kid, summer would stretch out endlessly. This aging thing is getting on my nerves. 

Anywhoo, as I have nothing new or exciting to report (shocking, given the high stakes life of intrigue that I lead), I thought I'd use today's post as a status check on posts of the past. A Bad Run & A Lesson In Dehydration

I had a horrible run yesterday. I set out to do 11 miles and ended up walking almost the entire last 3 miles of it. It would be easy to blame it on the heat (already past 80 degrees when we started at 7:30 am) but that wasn't it. The Greenway was packed with runners, each pushing forward through air so thick it literally felt like it was pushing you back. No, for me, if was a combination of factors that included: 

  • Barely drinking any water the day before the run
  • Not eating a proper meal the night before the run
  • Heading out too fast in the initial miles
