Not Dead Yet

I was over at my mom's the other day, sitting on the couch and petting Bailey, the fat Maltese. Apropos of nothing, Mom suddenly asked, "Do you feel like you need to call or check in on me daily since I live alo--"

"No," I said.

"Oh, well good," she said. "I wouldn't want you to feel like you need to."

"Not a problem."

There was a brief silence and then from her, "Of course, there's always the animals to think of if something should happen to me..."

Oh, she's good. She's VERY good. She knows that while I can stomach the idea of her body entering day three of rigamortis before I find her, I can't even entertain the thought that her animals may be trapped inside for days without access to food and water. Scared, alone, starving...

"Damn it," I say. "Now I won't be able to sleep unless I talk to you every day. You are an evil, evil woman."

"You don't have to call," said Mom. "I'll just send you an e-mail so you know I'm okay."

Sure enough, I had an e-mail the next day. "STILL ALIVE" read the subject line.

People, this is going to be a l-o-n-g winter.

Cheers,

Dena

Talking 'Bout a Res-o-lu-tion

Art From Hubpages.comSo how's everyone doing with those New Year resolutions? It's been less than a week but I thought I'd report on how the New Year is shaping up, what's working, what's not, and potential areas of concern.

The Resolve: Drink 64 oz. of water each day.

The Reality: Pretty close. I've finished off the 64 ounces four out of six days and came close on the other two. I find it difficult to reach the goal if I leave the house. At home I carry around a massive water jug and sip constantly from a straw. Out and about, I'm more likely to order a coffee and nix the water. Still, heading in the right direction.

Books for 2010

Last night at 11:28 pm I turned the page on my last book for the year: Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King. I added it to "the list" this morning. I've kept a list of books I've read since 1996. Why? I have no idea. It's kind of like collecting Hummels or bad holiday sweaters--once you start, it's hard to know when to give up the ghost.

For lack of other exciting blog material (Blair has been buried in "World of Warcraft" on his laptop for three days and I am OVER trying to have a conversation with someone who only wants to discuss why it was so unfair his character was put in prison for killing the undead), I thought I'd post my reading list for 2010. There were some highs and lows. Worst book had to be...
