Media Week

I've put a lot of face time in on local media this week. Monday I was the guest on "It's About Your Business," a live weekly Internet show for entrepreneurs and business owners to talk about their business. If you go to the site and click on "Past Shows" you'll see my picture and a link to the 30-minute interview.

On Tuesday I hosted my radio show, "How'd You End Up Here?" and had Joe Dass as my guest. Joe moved to NC from Brooklyn 3 years ago and is a riot of fun. Total New Yorker, down to the attitude and accent. He told a great story about how his first month here some car in front of him was driving too slow so he honked and made a few gestures before passing the car... which turned out

Uh, Scratch That Last Post?

Yesterday I wrote how excited I am about next weekends NC Marathon and my goal of running it in under 4 hours. I was even so bold as to use the phrase "Bring It" in my post title.

I would like to offer a formal and sincere apology to the Universe for what may, in light of today's excursion, be perceived as an early and unfounded cockiness on my part.

This morning I dragged Blair to High Point so we could drive the marathon course. OH. MY. GOD. Can we say "hills?" Can we say, "Lots of hills?" Can we say, "#@$&-ing unending amount of hills??

Seriously, I started

7 Day Marathon Countdown Begins - BRING IT

It's so close... seven days until the North Carolina Marathon. I hope I'm ready. My running partner, Marshall, and I feel well trained. I hate to put it in print lest I jinx myself but what the heck. We're hoping for slightly better than a 4-hour marathon. I've been told you should always have 3 goals for every race - an "ideal" goal, a mid-range goal, and the bottom of the barrel goal. My goals for next Saturday are:

IDEAL: If everything falls into place - weather, pollen levels, good course, adequate water stops, positive attitude, no blisters, and the proper alignment of the planets, we're hoping to squeeze out a 3:55 race.

MODERATE: If

Need Me? I'll Be In A Meeting

I went on a purge last year where I backed off, backed away, and backed down from a majority of professional and personal commitments. At the time, I had the distinct feeling my life ran me versus the other way around.

Backing off helped and I feel my time is more my own. Life, however, is creeping back in. This is not necessarily unwelcome. But looking at the ol' calendar I'm realizing I need to be careful or I'll again quickly be overwhelmed. So far, I have the following weekly and monthly commitments:

Monthly

Weekly

  •  Monday - Hill runs
  • Tuesday- Trainer
  • Thursday - Trail Run
  • Saturday - Long Run
  • Yoga - 2x
  • Allergy shot

Looking at it now, the schedule doesn't seem so bad. And after all, all the weekly commitments are "fun" stuff I do for personal enhancement. But when I add in drive time to each event plus client meetings and "life" appointments (hair cut, vet, occasional coffee or lunch with friends) I feel like I'm grasping at spare moments to do actual work. Plus, the meetings are just the start. Then there's the work to be done as a result of meeting.

Blair and I have decided to start reserving as much of Sundays as possible for our time together. Hate to have to schedule "us" time but I'd rather schedule and have it versus leaving it to chance.

How's everyone else faring? Finding decent work/life balance or is the scale stacked against you?
